Finding the midpoint or average of a list of dates comes up in scheduling, project planning, and data analysis, but calendar arithmetic makes it easy to get wrong by hand.

This tool converts each date into a simple day count, averages those counts, and converts the result back into a readable calendar date.

What Is Calculate Average Date?

A date-averaging tool that computes the arithmetic mean of any number of calendar dates.

It works entirely with whole-day counts internally, so the result is always a clean calendar date, never a fractional or ambiguous one.

How Calculate Average Date Works

Each input date is validated and converted into its epoch-day count, the number of whole days since January 1, 1970 (UTC).

The epoch-day counts are summed, divided by the number of dates, rounded to the nearest whole day, and converted back into a "YYYY-MM-DD" date.

When To Use Calculate Average Date

Use it to find the midpoint of a date range, the average due date across several tasks, or a representative date for a cluster of events.

For averaging times of day rather than calendar dates, use Calculate Average Time instead, since clock times need a circular mean to handle midnight correctly.

Best Practices

  • Enter each date on its own line in "YYYY-MM-DD" format to avoid ambiguity between day-first and month-first conventions.
  • If you need the average time of day as well as the average date, run the times separately through Calculate Average Time.

Developer Notes

Dates are parsed with a strict `YYYY-MM-DD` regex and then re-validated by round-tripping through `Date.UTC` and checking the resulting year/month/day match what was parsed, which rejects invalid dates like "2024-02-30" instead of letting `Date` silently roll them over into March. Epoch-day counts are computed as `Math.floor(Date.UTC(...) / 86400000)`, summed, divided by the count, and rounded with `Math.round` before being converted back to a date string, all using UTC throughout so the result never shifts with the browser's local time zone.
