Overview

Introduction

Sales and coupons advertise a percentage off, but figuring out exactly how much that saves you in dollars, and what you'll actually pay, still takes a bit of arithmetic.

This calculator takes the original price and the discount percentage and instantly shows both the amount you save and the final price.

What Is Discount Calculator?

A calculator that applies a discount percentage to an original price to compute both the dollar amount saved and the resulting final price.

It runs entirely client-side as part of this site's Math Tools collection, so nothing you enter is ever uploaded to a server.

How Discount Calculator Works

The discount percentage is divided by 100 and multiplied by the original price to get the discount amount, then that amount is subtracted from the original price to get the final price.

The calculation happens synchronously in JavaScript the moment you change either input, with no network round trip involved.

When To Use Discount Calculator

Use it whenever you see a percentage-off sale, coupon, or promotional discount and want to know exactly how much you'll save and what you'll actually pay.

It's handy for comparing deals across stores when discounts are advertised as different percentages off different original prices.

Features

Advantages

  • Shows both the savings amount and the final price at once, not just one or the other.
  • Instant results as you type, with no submit button or network delay.
  • Simple, single-purpose interface: enter a price and a discount percentage, get both numbers you need.

Limitations

  • Assumes a single flat percentage discount, it doesn't handle stacked discounts, tiered pricing, or discounts applied after tax.
  • Relies on standard JavaScript floating-point arithmetic, which is precise enough for everyday use but not intended for high-precision financial computation.

Examples

A simple 20% off sale

Input

Original price: 50, Discount: 20%

Output

Discount amount: 10, Final price: 40

50 x (20 / 100) = 10 saved, and 50 - 10 = 40 final price.

A steeper clearance discount

Input

Original price: 80, Discount: 35%

Output

Discount amount: 28, Final price: 52

80 x (35 / 100) = 28 saved, and 80 - 28 = 52 final price.

Best Practices & Notes

Best Practices

  • Check whether sales tax is applied before or after the discount, this calculator only handles the discount step itself.
  • For financial calculations involving money, round the final price to two decimal places yourself according to your currency's convention.

Developer Notes

Implemented as `discountAmount = originalPrice * (discountPercent / 100)` followed by `finalPrice = originalPrice - discountAmount` on plain JavaScript numbers, with an explicit check that rejects a negative original price; both display values are rounded to 6 decimal places with trailing zeros trimmed via the shared `trimmedRound` helper.

Discount Calculator Use Cases

  • Working out the final price and savings during a percentage-off sale or clearance event
  • Comparing which of several differently-priced, differently-discounted items is the better deal
  • Estimating how much a coupon code will actually save before checking out

Common Mistakes

  • Entering the discount as a decimal fraction like 0.2 instead of the percentage 20.
  • Forgetting that stacked discounts (like '20% off, then an extra 10% off') aren't the same as a single 30% discount, each discount applies to a different base amount.

Tips

  • If you're adding a tip or service charge to a bill instead of subtracting a discount, use the Tip Calculator.
  • If you just need the raw percentage-decrease math without the price framing, use the Percentage Decrease Calculator.
