Introduction
This tool adds a solid-color border around every frame of an animated GIF, entirely client-side, without cropping, scaling, or re-timing the original animation.
Because every frame's canvas grows by the same amount, the animated content keeps playing exactly as before, just inside a larger framed canvas.
What Is GIF Border Adder?
A client-side GIF border/frame generator that decodes an uploaded animation into its individual composited frames, adds a solid RGBA border to each one, and re-encodes the result as a new animated GIF with the same frame count, order, and delays.
It supports any pixel thickness and any RGBA color, including semi-transparent borders.
How GIF Border Adder Works
The GIF is first decoded frame-by-frame into flat RGBA pixel buffers using this site's shared GIF codec, which fully composites GIF's disposal methods so each frame is a plain, ready-to-edit image.
For each frame, a new, larger canvas is created, filled with the chosen border color, and the original frame is copied into the center at an offset equal to the border thickness. The bordered frames are then re-encoded into a single animated GIF, keeping each frame's original delay and the source's loop count.
When To Use GIF Border Adder
Use it to frame an animated sticker, meme, or product demo GIF for a polished, finished look, or to add a brand-color border before embedding a GIF somewhere it needs to stand out from its surroundings.
It's also useful for visually separating a transparent-background animated GIF from a page background it might otherwise blend into.

Advantages

Limitations
- Only a uniform thickness on all four sides is supported in one pass.
- Re-encoding always runs every frame back through this site's shared GIF encoder, which quantizes colors to a fixed 216-color palette (a GIF constraint, not something this tool can avoid), so subtly banded gradients can look slightly different after a round trip.
- Very thick borders on an already-large GIF can push the output past the site's 4096px maximum dimension, which the tool will reject with an explanation.

Best Practices
- Use a border color that complements the GIF's dominant colors for the most polished look.
- Keep the border reasonably thin relative to the frame size; very thick borders on small GIFs can visually overwhelm the animated content.
- Preview the result before publishing to confirm the loop still plays smoothly with the new canvas size.
Developer Notes
addBorderToGif in gif-border-adder.ts is a pure lib function operating on the shared DecodedGif shape from gif-codec.ts: it maps addBorderToFrame (itself pure, allocating a larger PixelBuffer and copying the source into a centered offset) across every frame, leaving each frame's delayCs untouched. gif-padding-adder.ts and gif-space-adder.ts both thinly wrap this same function under different names/defaults rather than re-deriving the per-frame canvas math.
