Introduction

A GIF captured or exported at a high frame rate can end up far larger than it needs to be for how it's actually used. This tool thins out the frame count by a chosen factor, keeping the animation's total length intact by folding dropped frames' timing into the ones that remain.

What Is GIF Frame Reducer?

A frame-downsampling tool that keeps every Nth frame of an animated GIF and discards the rest, for a chosen whole-number factor N.

Rather than silently making the animation play faster once frames are gone, it sums each dropped frame's delay into the surviving frame right before it, keeping total duration close to the original.

How GIF Frame Reducer Works

The GIF is decoded into its full frame array, then walked in groups of N consecutive frames. The first frame in each group is kept; its delay becomes the sum of every frame's delay in that group (capped at the codec's maximum delay).

The kept frames, now carrying their combined delays, are re-encoded as a new, smaller GIF89a file with the original loop count preserved.

When To Use GIF Frame Reducer

Use it when a GIF's file size needs trimming and a slightly choppier animation is an acceptable trade-off.

It's also useful for previewing what a lower-frame-rate version of an animation would look like before committing to a specific factor.

Frames are grouped in threes; only the first of each group survives, but it now displays for the combined time of all three.

Best Practices

  • Start with a small factor (2 or 3) and preview the result before jumping straight to a more aggressive reduction.
  • If the animation has non-uniform delays, check the result's timing with the GIF Frame Player rather than assuming it looks identical.
  • Pair with the GIF Duplicator afterward if you want a clean re-saved copy once you're happy with the reduced frame count.

Developer Notes

Summing (rather than discarding) dropped-frame delays was a deliberate design choice over the simpler alternative of just keeping every Nth frame's own original delay, since the latter would silently shorten total playback time in a way many users wouldn't expect from a tool billed as a frame-count reducer.
